Republican Senators Have the Power to Save the 

Heartbeat Bill Before it Dies

After assuring pro-life leaders that he intended to bring the Heartbeat Bill to a vote after the November election, Senate President Tom Niehaus has broken yet another promise.

“What the OUTGOING Senate President has to say isn't nearly as significant as what the INCOMING Senate President and the 21 other Republican Senators can do about it,” said Janet Porter, President of Faith2Action, who initiated the Heartbeat Bill.

Porter circulated the state's first successful discharge petition in 1994, which led to the passage of the nation's first ban on Partial Birth Abortion. “We have been here before,” said Porter. “All we need is 17 Senate Republicans to sign a discharge form to bring the bill to the floor for a vote.”

“The Republican Senate majority has the power to force a floor vote--regardless of Niehaus' obstruction,” said Lori Viars, Vice President of Warren County Right to Life, and Vice Chair of Warren County Republican Party. “They've had two years to pass this bill. Are Senate Republicans who ran as pro-lifers really going to let this bill die?” asked Viars.

“Unless pro-lifers want to hold signs and march for 40 more years, they should pick up the phone and call every Republican Senator and demand a floor vote for the Heartbeat Bill before their inaction kills it,” said Porter.
